June 20, 2023 - “Summer Fun”, GCV Lily Show, Orange VA

Report from Pauline Clark, Chair

Team: Sherri Dennis , Nan Forbes, Sherri Anderson, Kassie Kingsley, June Hambrick, Carole Maloney, Alex Patton, Alyce Rideout, Lyndsay Welsh

The team and I participated at the GCV Lily Show held in Orange, Virginia. The team was composed of Lyndsay, Nan, Alyce, Alex, Carole, June, Kassie, Sherri D and Sherri A. Our theme was "On The Road Again".

Carole provided a lovely leather bag and Nan provided maps, a model car and a vase for the entry. It was a beautiful design with only four types of flowers, two of which came from my garden. The lily's, Sherri A. bought from Wegman’s, were double blooms and everyone at the Lily Show could not believe how stunning they were.

Sherri A. and I left at 5:30 AM to get to Orange and put together our design in the workroom. Once placed, I moved to the Judge's room as I was to help judge some of the other classes. Sherri A, who is also interested in learning to judge, was asked to participate as a runner. She is now officially in the student judges program and also received a judge's gift bag! GCV will have a formal new student judge program kick off in September. Maybe something to let members know who may be interested.

There were 5 entries in our class. After we saw the other entries, we knew we were out of our league. The clear blue and red winning entries were over the top artistic. Missy Buckingham, former GCV President, judged our class! The comments on our entry were that we designed well to our intent, but the stems in the vase were distracting… they have to say something.

We had to wait until 5PM to remove our entry, so we took the opportunity to explore Orange county including some shopping at the fabulous Posh Boutique. While we did not place, we learned a great deal. If the class is not a defined design, you have to go big, abstract and artsy. Lesson for future flower show chairs. Below are pictures of our entry. And again while we did not place, it was such a pleasure to work with this team. Having the whole team's experience and insight is key to creating a winning design.
