A little bit of Poetry

And Now It’s September
and the garden diminishes: cucumber leaves rumpled and rusty, zucchini felled by borers, tomatoes sparse on the vines. But out in the perennial beds, there’s one last blast of color: ignitions of goldenrod, flamboyant asters, spiraling mums, all those flashy spikes waving in the wind, conducting summer’s final notes.
The ornamental grasses have gone to seed, haloed in the last light. Nights grow chilly, but the days are still warm; I wear the sun like a shawl on my neck and arms. Hundreds of blackbirds ribbon in, settle in the trees, so many black leaves, then, just as suddenly, they’re gone. This is autumn’s great Departure Gate, and everyone, boarding passes in hand, waits patiently in a long, long line.

In the News: Flower Arrangement Project
On Tuesday , August 25, 2020, four members of the Leesburg Garden Club got together with our president, Suzi Worsham at her home at Riverside on the Potomac, to arrange 30 vases full of colorful flowers to present to our community. We each donned masks and stayed 6 feet apart and enjoyed our time together. It was a great opportunity to be creative, whimsical and artistic with atleast 10 buckets full of glorious, colorful flowers from our gardens.
We then brought them to the heroes in our town of Leesburg who have been so strong in serving our community during the pandemic. We visited and dropped off the flowers to all the Police stations and Fire stations ( who also got loaves of home made zucchini bread) Post offices, Nursing homes and Assisted Living places, INOVA hospital and the Children's Emergency room ,Town hall, Urgent Care facilities and the two newspapers in town. They were well received and much appreciated by the recipients.
The arrangers were: Ingeborg Bock, Tracy Coffing, Sherri Anderson and Linda MacLean with generous flower offerings by Suzi Worsham, Kate Williams and Sherri Dennis. All of us felt that representing the Leesburg Garden Club in such a generous way was a wonderful and heartfelt experience.
